Roundabout Quilt

January 25, 2022

Last week I promised you a barrage of blog post activity and here we go with another free quilt pattern release this week! Technically this is not a new quilt pattern for this blog, it’s a rerelease because the Roundabout quilt pattern and for a limited time it’ll be free on my Free Projects page. The pattern got a makeover with some Art Gallery Fabrics materials and an additional quilt size!

Update: As of April 2024, Roundabout is no longer a free pattern and as been updated again with 2 additional project sizes (4 total sizes). Find this pattern in my Shop.

The cover quilt, made in my new Art Gallery Fabrics Shine On prints remains the same 72’’ square size as the original Roundabout pattern. Nothing has changed from the original—just a remake with my new collection.

This is one of those super-fun patterns that’s beginner-friendly and easy but packs a graphic punch that newbie and seasoned quilter’s can both appreciate. Nothing says it has to be a difficult project for it to be beautiful!

Since my Shine On collection has a Farmhouse, southwest-vibe I think these colors and the bold graphic of this quilt would look good in so many decor styles happening today. I love the limited palette on this quilt that picks up the natural tones in the room and has those hits of gold to bring out the antique brass of the bed. For the backing, I used the Artifact Terra flannel from the collection that’s available at Lady Belle Fabric.

Brooke Becker at Lady Belle Fabric has kitted the Roundabout Full quilt in the fabric I used in the cover quilt (image 1 above). Due to short supply of the background (sashing) off-white Shine On Dotting print, Brooke is offering kit options with different sashing choices—they’re all fantastic, just make sure to select which background you’d like or if supply runs out of option 1 you can opt for a pre-order and get it when she’s restocked with the original print.

Let’s talk about the fun quilting on this quilt that was done by Brooke Becker at Lady Belle Fabric. Brooke is so easy to work with and always helps me pick the perfect design for my quilts. I love the 70s Flower Child look of this panto called, Giant Daisy. For the batting, I used Hobbs Tuscany Supreme 100% Unbleached Cotton that is their fluffiest cotton batting.

Here’s where the Roundabout pattern gets it’s real update with the addition of a Roundabout Baby quilt! It’s so darn cute and constructed about the same way—only the sashing is narrower and there’s an inverse of where the squares are placed on the quilt.

Roundabout Baby is 44’’ square and my sample is made using Art Gallery Fabrics flannels from my Shine On collection plus flannels from the AGF solids and Plaid of My Dreams. For the sashing I used the AGF Linen blend and Shannon Cuddle 3 Wide for the backing to make this a dreamy, snuggly quilt for baby.

I did the quilting on this baby quilt on my domestic sewing machine and opted for simple straight stitching following the concentric rings of the quilt on the squares and a single wavy stitch line on the narrower linen rings. For the batting, I used Hobbs Tuscany Silk batting. The quilt has a lovely weighted feeling and very warm and snuggly.

You could easily make this baby quilt in a weekend if needed—it’s really that easy and a nice size to quilt it yourself.

The pretty crib sheet in this room is the Shine On Paisley Bloom print in knit—talk about soft and snuggly!

Meet the Testers

It would not be a pattern launch without seeing the samples my testers made with this pattern. This is the part that’s so exciting for me is when these talented ladies take my pattern and make it their own. I have been setting up a Pinterest board for our group and ask my testers to pull images from online and create a mood board for their quilt. From the photos they take of the quilt and the inspiration images I put together a collage that shows off their brilliant work. I hope you enjoy the Roundabout quilt show!
