The twin-size quilt for the pattern cover is made with prints from my new Art Gallery Fabrics Charming One collection that just started shipping to shops in August. I used AGF Pure Solids White Linen for the background and two subtle blender prints pulled from my Willow and Fanciful collections to get the fat quarter fabric count I needed for my quilt.

You may already have a stash of fabrics or a fabric collection in mind for this quilt, but if you’d like to make the exact version featured on the cover and prefer not to hunt down each individual print yourself, we’ve made that easy. I partnered with trusted quilt shops to offer Patchwork Heart ready-made kits in multiple sizes. For my quilt, I used Hobbs Batting Polydown batting inside and love how the batting adds loft and definition to the Baptist Fan quilting design. The long arm quilting was done by Joyce Ulm of Eva Mae’s Custom Quilts.

For the back of my quilt, I used the Global Charm quilting cotton print from the Charming One collection. A beautiful backing on your quilt is like getting two quilts in one—a delightful surprise every time you turn it over.

With every new pattern release, my tester team also makes their own quilt versions. I love working with this group of talented ladies, who bring fresh ideas and creativity to every project, and they always come up with the prettiest quilts in fabric selections I could never have dreamed up on my own! The following showcase of their work not only highlights their individual styles but also illustrates how versatile this pattern is across a wide variety of fabric prints and color palettes. Plus, three of the testers are shop owners and are offering kits in their own Patchwork Heart versions, so you can recreate their beautiful interpretations too.

Amanda Bagin

Amanda consistently brings a fresh, modern perspective to her choice of colors and fabrics when testing my patterns. She made these beautiful tonal blocks for a set of pillows using Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Solids colors of Tiger Lily, Coral Reef, and Snow and crafted truly stunning decor pieces that brighten any room—any time of the year. MELISSA DAVID

Melissa David of Quilting Above the Clouds on Instagram is a prolific maker known for her creativity and dedication to quilting. Melissa tested the Pillow Set project from the Patchwork Hearts quilt pattern and then cleverly transformed four pillow sets into four beautiful tote bags.

Melissa constructed her totes following Tamara Darragh’s blog post tutorial “How to Make a Quilted Tote from any Quilt Block” with these additional notes from Melissa:
Melissa followed the Patchwork Hearts pillow instructions to make a coordinated set of pillows that she then turned into one tote front panel and one tote back panel, using Tamara’s “How to Make a Quilted Tote from any Quilt Block” as her guide to construct the bags. For her version of the totes, she added 1-1/2” side strips of background fabric to both the left and right sides of each panel, and a 2-1/2” bottom strip of background fabric, ensuring the block details would not be wrapped around the bottom of the tote once the panels were assembled.
Melissa strongly recommends using a heavyweight fusible fleece, such as Pellon 973F, for the tote front and back rather than batting; it gives these larger totes excellent structure and meant she didn’t need to fuse interfacing to the lining fabric. She then quilted the tote front and back using her domestic sewing machine.
For the bag assembly, she cut a 2” square for boxing the corners, and used a ¼” seam allowance (instead of ½”) to sew her panels together, then she followed Tamara’s clear instructions for making the straps and finishing the bag.

Mallory is the owner of the Fieldstone Fabric shop, online sewing creator, and quilt designer. For her test sample, Mallory has made this storybook, crib size Patchwork Hearts quilt in assorted sweet prints from Art Gallery Fabrics and has backed it with a beautiful Maureen Cracknell print. TRACEY TABER-PERRY

Tracey’s pattern tests always delight me because not only is she a talented maker, she is also a thoughtful maker who selects the prettiest fabrics and most pleasing color combinations. I truly love that she made her Patchwork Hearts test quilt in a patriotic-themed palette. Like Tracey said in her notes for the project, “…it doesn’t scream patriotic but is a more subtle version of an Americana quilt.” Using mostly prints from my Kindred collections for Art Gallery Fabrics, Tracey also incorporated additional prints from Maureen Cracknell’s Maven line, AGF Studios Inkperfect, Elizabeth Chappell’s Day Trip print for the background, and two prints from my Spruce collection. I also enjoyed reading Tracey’s comment about the pattern: “As always—your patterns have a tendency—I want to create more quilts from the Patchwork Hearts pattern,” which makes me so happy that my patterns inspire beyond the first make! JOYCE ULM

Joyce Ulm selected prints from my Lilliput collection for Art Gallery Fabrics to create this absolutely gorgeous crib Patchwork Hearts quilt. In addition, Joyce backed her beautiful quilt with cozy Cuddle material from Shannon Fabrics, which adds an extra layer of warmth, texture, and drape—I truly love everything about this quilt! Joyce’s work is consistently flawless, and she also does the long arm quilting on all of her quilts, always selecting the perfect pantograph design that complements her pieces perfectly. Each of the Tester graphics beautifully highlight the unique personalities of every maker, but none express individuality quite as vividly as Marija’s thoughtful color and print selections, which perfectly capture her boldness and nature-loving spirit. I particularly adore the choice of the rich red background in Marija’s fabric pull featuring prints from my Potager collection for Art Gallery Fabrics. Marija is truly the queen of free motion quilting, skillfully completing all the quilting on her domestic sewing machine with remarkable precision and creativity and in only 3 hours!
