Quilted Carryall

January 13, 2023

There’s a new pattern in my shop for a quilted bag that’s easy to make and fun to use. The Quilted Carryall is a fancy shopping bag-style tote with a snap closer and roomy welt zipper pocket inside.

Buy the Pattern

This tote bag has been on my to-design list for sometime now but there’s nothing like the gentle push of needing to make baby gifts and an upcoming Look Book to final make the idea into a reality!

The fabrics used in the Quilted Carryall cover sample are all ones I’ve designed for Art Gallery Fabrics. The bag exterior is Fanciful - Celeste and the bag interior is Willowy from the Willow collection. I’ll have links in my Amazon Associate Picks at the end of this post for the zipper and magnetic snaps I used in my tote.

You’ll find the complete material list on the pattern listing page but I also want to talk about the fusible fleece used for my sample and strongly recommend you using the same type if you want a perky-stand up bag that’s not floppy. I used The Warm Company Fusible Warm Fleece 2 double sided and it was a dream to work with!

Don’t be at all intimidated about making this bag—the construction couldn’t be easier with it’s a self-lined, one-piece body. Also, adding the welt zip pocket to your bag is a breeze to install in the interior. I even give instructions for how to keep your directional prints running the direct you want them to!

The boxy shape of this tote is based on the kind of bag you may take into a grocery store and has a wide opening for stowing a lot! This would make a great diaper bag or travel busy bag for kids stuff, a tote for sewing or knitting projects, a gift bag, a shopping bag, book bag, beach bag, or purse.

I used a walking foot on my sewing machine for the quilting and bag construction and found it help for everything to stay put and not shift on me when sewing the layers. My sewing machine had no troubles sewing through the quilted layers when assembling.

Like I said at the beginning of this post, I was prompted to finally make and write up this Quilted Carryall pattern out of the need to make a baby gift and I’ll be using the bag as a gift bag to hold the quilt you see a peek of at the top left. A little board book and the Scallop Bunting posted about last week will complete the special package.

Read the Freebies blog post from last week to learn about the New Wave Pillow (left) and the Scallop Bunting garland (in bag). I’ll be blogging about the baby quilt in my next blog post to recap the upcoming Fanciful Look Book releasing later this month.

Meet the Testers

With every pattern release my testers also make samples. It’s a good way for me to get feedback on a pattern and the instructions and it’s also a nice way to show you different version of the project.
