With Mother’s Day right around the corner next month, it’s always nice to make Mom a thoughtful, useful, and personal handmade gift. Give the gift of comfort and calm with this Weighted Therapy Mask crafted from buttery-soft Art Gallery Fabrics flannel—perfect for relaxing moments and gentle self-care.
Create a Spa Experience
The Weighted Therapy Mask promotes sleep and relaxation through gentle, evenly distributed weight rather than relying on heat or aroma therapy. Thoughtfully filled with BPA-free polyethylene plastic stuffing pellets (Amazon affiliate link for pellets I used) to provide just the right amount of inherently cool, soothing weight, the therapy mask can also be chilled in the freezer for extra cooling relief while still effectively blocking out light and reducing some ambient sound when draped across the eyes and ears. For flexible comfort, the mask can be loosely tied behind the head or simply placed across the eyes, laid over the shoulders and neck, or even rested on the upper chest to deliver a calming, weighted sense of serenity. The mask can be worn by both back and side sleepers. One size fits almost everyone. I even had my husband try it on for size and tie around his head and it was plenty generous a fit.
The best material to use for the Weighted Therapy Mask is Art Gallery Fabrics flannel. The double-brushed, thick flannel provides soft, cozy comfort as well as reassurance that it’s the ideal fabric to place next to your skin, thanks to its OEKO-TEX certified cotton fiber content. I made three samples using flannel prints from my Willow, Listen to Your Heart, and Tumbleweed collections. One for me, and two for gifting.
You may be wondering if this mask is something you can launder and the answer is, YES! Wash the mask within a sealed laundry bag in a full load of laundry, then pop the bagged mask it into a low to medium heat dryer and dry thoroughly. DO NOT microwave this mask, you could melt the pellets. See pattern for more details for more on how to use and care for the mask.
Give the ultimate Mother’s Day gift by pairing this pattern with the Overlap Closure Pillowcase pattern and adding a delicate crocheted edge detail for a beautifully finished, heartfelt touch.
The Weighted Therapy Mask pattern is a budget-friendly pattern and great for beginner’s to make in under an hour. You may even want to get the kids involved in filling the mask with pellets—just have a large bowl under the mask as you fill!
To watch a quickie tutorial for making a Weighted Therapy Mask, check out my Reel on Instagram, HERE.
There is a template shape included in the PDF instructions. To print the template accurately, set your printer to 100% full size (no scaling), then confirm the printout is true to scale by checking that the reference square measures exactly 1". Cut out and use the paper template or trace the shape onto heavy-duty template material, then neatly cut along the outer black line and label the piece.
Meet the Testers
With every new pattern release, my tester team also creates their own versions. I love collaborating with this talented group of women! A couple of the testers chose AGF quilting cotton rather than flannel and were very pleased with the finished results.
