Welcome back to Week 3 of the Goose Goose Sew Along! Last week focused on making the Goose Blocks and was the most intensive week for piecing—everything gets easier from here, and the rest will go more quickly with piecing the Heart Blocks this week, so take a deep breath and enjoy the steady progress.
If you missed the start of the sew along, take a look at the Goose Goose SAL Week 1 post, then come back here when you’re caught up and ready.
HOW THE SEW ALONG WORKS
During the 5-week sew-along, we’ll break the pattern into manageable, bite-sized tasks so you still have plenty of time for summer activities and other commitments. You’re welcome to sew ahead at your own pace, or follow each week’s blog post prompt and complete just the steps needed for that week. I’ll be using this blog to post helpful tips and handy tricks for making this quilt, and the blog will also be the place where the weekly giveaways are hosted.
There’s no signup for this event. Simply purchase the Goose Goose PDF pattern from my website SHOP and follow along, sewing with me each week at your own pace. For the giveaways, instructions will appear each week explaining how to leave comments on the relevant blog posts to enter for that prize; names will be drawn from the comment pool on each specific post—see this week’s giveaway at the end of this post.
Above is the SAL schedule for what I’ll cover each week and the exciting giveaways! Be sure to read to the bottom of this post for how to enter into the Week 3 giveaway where 2 lucky winners will win one of my Aurifil Thread sets!
I’m collaborating with several shops to bring you Goose Goose quilt kits in both crib and throw/twin sizes, so you’ll have options if you don’t want to source the fabrics on your own. All their Goose Goose kits are made with Art Gallery Fabrics. You can also see all the kits in one place on this Instagram post @sharonhollanddeisgns.

WEEK 3 - Heart BLOCKS
Let’s jump right into your assignment for this week. Remember, you’re encouraged to work at your own pace and feel free to sew ahead if you’d like.
SOME TIPS FOR SEWING THE Heart BLOCKS
Just like sewing the Goose Blocks, the Heart Blocks use a Flippy-Corner method to create the patchwork heart shape. You’ll notice the squares used for the Heart Blocks are really, really small — which can make them fiddly to handle. If you’d like to skip excessive pinning to hold the tiny squares to the corners, try the glue stick method. Adding just a tiny dab of glue stick to the very outer tip of the square or to the base piece will hold the fabrics in place temporarily and keep everything aligned while you sew, so you don’t have to wrestle with pins. I like to glue my directionally checked pieces in an assembly line, then batch-sew one side with chain stitching, clip the connecting threads to separate the units, and sew the other side when pieces are two-sided. There’s luckily no right- or left-facing to keep track of with the Heart Blocks, so you can chain-piece to your heart’s content here.
When I went to HH America’s this May (it’s a yarn and sewing trade show) I treated myself to a VERY fancy sewing machine, a PFAFF Creative Icon 2 that also functions as an embroidery machine. It will take me years to explore even a fraction of its features, but for now I’ve been piecing my quilts with it and enjoying the laser guide feature, which saves me a lot of time marking diagonal lines—especially on those tiny heart corner squares.
If your heart fabric shows a clear up-and-down direction, be sure to sew the smaller Flippy-Corner squares to the top of the heart and the slightly larger Flippy-Corner squares to the bottom so the design reads correctly.
WEEK 3 GIVEAWAY!
Each of the five weeks of the sew along I’ll share helpful tips or clever tricks for completing that week’s sewing assignment and also announce the new giveaway prize. Some weeks I’ll select just one winner from the comments on that blog post, and other weeks there may be multiple prizes so a few lucky readers will be chosen—each week brings a fresh opportunity to win something you’ll truly enjoy adding to your sewing studio!

I’m thrilled to be partnering with Aurifil to design coordinating thread sets for two of my Art Gallery Fabrics collections. Last year, the Midsummer Stitching 10-small-spool thread set was released to perfectly complement my AGF Midsummer fabric line, and this spring I did the same with the Aurifil Spruce Threads set to coordinate with my AGF Spruce fabric collection.
Bonus: Learn how to make these perfectly-sized 10 Aurifil Spools Tray with my tutorial!
Both thread sets each include 10 small spools in two different thread weights; the Spruce Threads set additionally offers variations in fiber content. Each collection presents a distinct color palette and mood, making them versatile, attractive options to keep on hand for a wide range of sewing projects.
Two lucky winners will be drawn in the Aurifil giveaway for week 3 of the sew along! The first name drawn will win the Midsummer Stitching boxed thread set and the second name drawn will win the Spruce Threads boxed thread set.
