Imagine visiting a Scottish country estate for the holidays, taking peaceful woodland walks, and later snuggling under a cozy plaid throw as you enjoy a steaming cup of tea served in traditional style. You don’t have to just imagine it — you can create your very own magical Christmas getaway right in your own home with Sharon Holland’s Spruce fabric collection for Art Gallery Fabrics, bringing timeless comfort and festive charm to every corner.
Spruce Collection
My newest collection, Spruce, includes 16 quilting cottons, an AGF 2.5 Edition binding, and a cozy flannel so you can create beautiful pieces for your home, wardrobe, and gift giving. While the colors in this collection may read as Christmas-inspired, there are no explicitly Christmas-themed prints; many of the designs work well year-round and suit any season.
Tall Pines Quilt
Last year, Art Gallery Fabrics began offering designer quilt kits paired with their new collections. You may remember my Garden Gate and Sew Together quilt patterns—well, this year’s new fabric collections will also have quilt kits. The Spruce collection Tall Pines quilt has already been kitted and distributed to fabric shops, which then sell the kits directly to you, the consumer. You will find a listing of shops at the very end of the Spruce Look Book that carry the collection, Tall Pines kits, and/or the Tall Pines printed pattern — simply click the shop name links to visit each store.
The Tall Pines quilt is a generous 63-1/2” square oversized throw, backed with soft, double-brushed flannel from the Spruce collection. It’s the quilt everyone will reach for first, and makes a cozy, stylish statement from crisp fall mornings through chilly winter nights.
This beginner-friendly quilt pattern could easily be pieced in a weekend! I sent my quilt top out to be long-armed by Joyce Ulm of Eva Mae’s Custom Quilts and used Hobbs Batting Tuscany Cotton Wool inside for a thick, traditional-weight finish. The cozy flannel backing also adds pleasant heft to the quilt, giving extra warmth and snuggly comfort for years to come.
For this blog post, I intend to focus solely on the projects I created for the Spruce Look Book. If you’re only viewing my post, you’ll be missing out on many other wonderful projects made from my new collection. The Art Gallery Fabrics Spruce virtual Look Book is brimming with sewing inspiration and features projects submitted by talented pattern designers and makers. Be sure to browse the pages from cover to cover so you don’t miss any of the creativity and ideas for sewing with Spruce!
Goose Goose Pillows
As I’m planning which projects to stitch for the Look Book, I’m also picturing in my head the photography and how best to style each finished piece. I envisioned a cozy cottage bedroom scene centered around the Tall Pines throw quilt and a collection of plump, inviting pillows. Why not add a few darling Goose Goose accent pillows in pops of the perfect red from the collection to complete the warm, layered look?
You and your guests will be charmed by these delightful geese pillows, hand-quilted using my new Aurifil Spruce Threads set 12 wt wool thread and Hobbs Batting Tuscany Cotton Wool batting for a cozy, textured finish. They’ll be impressed by the professional-looking lapped zipper closure on the back of each pillow, a detail you can easily reproduce using the fully illustrated, step-by-step instructions included in the Goose Goose pattern, which features a pair of pillows plus two quilt size options. If you missed my Q & A interview with Aurifil, you can read that, HERE to learn more about me, my design process for creating the Spruce collection, and my Aurifil thread collection.

Overlap Closer Pillow Case
To add to the layered look on my styled bed, I stitched a pair of Overlap Closure Pillowcases with delicate crochet-edge detailing. Last spring I published a PDF pattern that not only teaches you how to make custom-sized, elegantly finished pillowcases but also walks you step-by-step through crocheting three beautiful hand-crocheted edges, with accompanying video demonstrations to guide you. Purchase the Overlap Closure Pillowcase pattern from my shop and create your own, one-of-a-kind look for your bed or guest bed!
There are so many beautiful photos to share that I decided to split my Look Book blog post into Part 1 and Part 2 so I wouldn’t feel rushed when telling their story. I also made the cutest little bag and, unsure where it fits best, I’ve chosen to include it with the Spruce bedroom images; Part 2 will focus on Spruce Christmas (to be a blog post I’ll publish early next week).
Orbit Bag
As soon as I saw this Orbit Bag pattern by Helen’s Closet Patterns, I knew it was a must-make with my Spruce collection!

I chose the patchwork star view from the pattern and picked some of my favorite Spruce prints for the pieced front. The bag’s shape reminded me of a canteen, so I used the red plaid flannel around the side and for the strap to heighten that camp feeling. The back of the bag (not shown) features the Tulip Time print same as the block background, and the remaining prints I haven’t mentioned were used to line and finish the interior.
It’s the perfect-size bag for a holiday shopping excursion — roomy enough for essentials but compact enough to carry all day without fuss. I know I’ll be making more of these bags; they’re so darn cute and surprisingly quick and easy to make. Next time, however, I’ll add the optional strap hardware so I can create an adjustable strap for even more comfort and versatility.
The Spruce Look Book Part 2 post will be published early next week to showcase the smaller projects I made with my Art Gallery Fabrics Spruce collection. Expect fresh ideas that may inspire you to start your holiday sewing sooner than usual, plus a delightful no-sew craft you’ll be excited to try!
Until then, look for the Spruce collection now in stock at your favorite quilt shops, shop the Spruce quilt kits, and enjoy the sewing inspiration in the Spruce Look Book’s virtual pages.
